Stanmore College’s Ofsted rating increased by 2 grades in just over a year

The students and staff of Stanmore College are celebrating their latest Ofsted inspection report, just published on the Ofsted web-site ( The report is a glowing tribute to the hard work of all staff and emphasises the College's 'rapid and significant improvement in the quality of provision' which had previously rated the College in 2015 as 'Inadequate'.

It is useful to reflect on how well the College improved, moving an 'Inadequate' judgement to a consistent set of 'Good' grades in just over a year. This leap in improvement, in such a short time, is seldom seen or reported on by Ofsted. Stanmore College is just the third college nationwide out of 80 colleges to have improved by two grades under the new Common Inspection Framework.

All the College's main grades given by Ofsted are now all judged to be Good, including: teaching, learning and assessment; the outcomes for learners; leadership and management; and personal development, behaviour and welfare of students. This very positive picture led to the Overall Effectiveness of the College to be Good.

The inspection was completed on 3rd February 2017 by a team of seven inspectors, led by Her Majesty's Inspector Richard Pemble. The report highlights the high achievement and good progress made by students who 'make good gains in their confidence and self-esteem'.

The Principal of the College, Sarbdip Noonan, was proud of the "extremely hard work by all staff, who support our students to pass their courses successfully and go on to university or jobs."

The Ofsted report comments that 'Teachers have improved their skills, which are now good, to support their learners effectively and raise their aspirations' and commends the students' 'high standards of conduct and behaviour.'

The Chair of Governors, John Howard, said: "this is a tremendous validation of both the dedication and determination of all the staff and also the passionate and inspirational leadership of the Principal, Sarbdip Noonan, who has only been in post since January last year."

Harrow MP Bob Blackman said: "This is wonderful news for the community, which needs a strong local college to support local people and employers. I am very impressed with the commitment shown by students, staff, managers and governors."

Leader of Harrow Council, Councillor Sachin Shah, commented "Absolutely great news that the College has improved the quality of its provision. With OFSTED now rating the Teaching Learning and standard as Good, Harrow students will know they are getting an excellent education. I'm always looking to get the best for Harrow residents, and with Stanmore College, I know I will."
