TV writer inspires students at International Women’s Day event

Children’s writer Amanda Swift – who has created episodes of The Story of Tracy Beaker for radio and Horrid Henry for television – was the inspiring guest of honour at a special event held to mark International Women’s Day at Lewisham Southwark College on 18 May.

The author presented prizes to winners of the College's International Women's Day writing competition, which challenged students to write 50 or more words about a woman they admire and why.

The competition inspired many students to put pen to paper, attracting [hundreds of] entries from across the College community. At the competition final, where the winners' work was displayed, students got the chance to meet Amanda and talk about what inspired them.

In addition to creating TV episodes for a number of well-known children's programmes, Amanda has written eight books for five to eight year olds in her Guinea Pigs Online and Puppies Online series as well as a range of books for nine to 12 year olds.

Amanda said: 'As a local author and an ex-teacher at Lewisham Southwark College, I was delighted to present the prizes. I judged the GCSE-level entries and they were very inspiring.'

Head of Department, Julie Hutton, commented: 'It was fantastic to see so many students inspired to write about international women who have achieved great things. Many of the entrants do not have English as their first language, which makes this an even greater achievement. I think that meeting Amanda and hearing about her work will encourage many of our winners to continue writing.'

The first place winners were: Gloria Miko Buila and Egenia Mankola (Entry 1), Maria Luz Zurita Argota and Enid Ryan (Entry 2), Long Ping Wu and Juliette Grassby-Lewis (Entry 3), Masooda Hashimi and David Kimmins (Level 1), Jana Ikere and Juliette Grassby-Lewis (Level 2) and Myla-Star Pott and Juliette Grassby-Lewis (Level 2 Home Ed Group).
