BSC Students' Fashion Show Wows Local Shoppers

Barnet and Southgate College Fashion students delivered a glamorous catwalk fashion show at Brent Cross Shopping Mall, earlier this month.

The event showcased the talents of 33 Barnet and Southgate College Fashion students; who all continually work on their collections throughout the year, but this was a unique opportunity for them to see their work modelled on a catwalk, with a live audience.

The Barnet and Southgate College Fashion students performed two impressive catwalk shows in the centre of the shopping centre, featuring inspiring collections based on four topical themes: Jane Austen, white shirts, bloom for real and futuristic.

Barnet and Southgate College Level 3 Fashion student, Daniela Mani is 19 years old and lives in Finchley, she said: -

'The themes behind both my fashion collections today were 'Jane Austen' and 'White Shirts'. As part of my inspiration all of the fashion students and teachers went on a trip to Bath, where Jane Austen lived and we visited the fashion museum there for ideas. Our brief was to imagine a 'Top Shop' customer and to design something that they would wear. So I decided to go with a light coloured dress; I mixed the old with the new with the fabric choice and puffed out skirt and chose a shorter style to reflect the new element.

My white shirt design on the other hand is very simple and unisex. It is designed for all ages, with sheer panelling and it's oversized so fits anyone. I've really enjoyed the fashion show and to see my garments coming down the catwalk, and seeing people reacting to them has been great. I love the fashion rooms at Barnet and Southgate College and love coming to College, one day I hope to work in the fashion industry and maybe open my own shop selling my own designs. There have been so many highlights to the course but I'm really looking forward to our trip to New York later this year to get some design inspiration.'

Barnet and Southgate College Principal David Byrne said:

'The catwalk show at Brent Cross is an excellent opportunity for our fashion students to come together to work on a live project. This is a potential direction that they may follow, so the event provides valuable experience as well as contributing to their qualifications. Collaborations of this nature are fundamental in terms of the student experience and generate a rewarding and professional perspective, developing their confidence to step into the commercial world and help them secure employment after their course'.
