Dr Pirie of the Adam Smith Institute spoke to Economics students at the Harrow on the Hill campus on Tuesday, 21st of October. The topic was Ten Things that Everyone gets Wrong.
Harrow College students were spellbound by Dr Pirie's engaging talk. The talk successfully demystified the received ideas on issues ranging from poverty reduction to global warming. Over 120 students from Harrow College and its collegiate schools attended the programme.
Dr Pirie is the president of the Adam Smith Institute, Britain's leading innovator in market economic policies. Since 1977 it has been part of a worldwide movement towards free markets and free trade.
The session started with Dr Pirie's interesting discussion of various economic misconceptions followed by intelligent questions from the students. The students asked a variety of questions ranging from the credit crunch to wealth creation. Dr Pirie commented, 'Not surprisingly, most of the questions were on the current situation. Students are well informed about it and also on the steps taken to combat it. It was fun discussing it with them.'
Alf Filer, Economics and Business Lecturer said of the event, 'It was entertaining and informative, as well as controversial. A thoroughly enjoyable and successful event; one student, Jasur, asked a question on tax and as a result was invited to apply to take up a post at the Adam Smith Institute.'
