West Thames College triumph at IMATS

HND Specialist Makeup student Emily Dowdeswell has continued West Thames College's incredible record at the International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) Awards by taking first prize in the Student Make-Up Competition.

Held at Alexandra Palace on 24-25 January, IMATS - the most significant annual event for the industry - brings together specialists and industry professionals from the world of stage and screen, including Oscar and BAFTA winners, to showcase the latest makeup techniques.

The Student Make-Up Competition, an integral part of the event, included eight finalists from as far afield as America, the Philippines and Tokyo and was judged on technique, the application of makeup and the creativity of design. The theme for this year's competition was Gothic Beauty, with contestants given two hours to complete their designs.

Talented Emily (22 from Newport, Wales) took the show by storm, gaining first prize with her stunning 'Burlesque Showgirl' creation and ensuring a third victory in a row at the event for West Thames College. "I was absolutely amazed when I realised I'd won and it still hasn't sunk in!" Emily said. "I' couldn't have done it without the support of my classmates and lecturers and I'm also really grateful to my model Sophie for her incredible patience."

Emily received £600 plus a goody bag full of the latest makeup for film and stage.
