The Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) is an example of how much involvement some employers have with students and prospective employees.

In 1991 both Barking and Havering colleges began running the apprentice training programme at the Ford Motor Company. This relationship has since been built on and culminated in the creation of a brand new state of the art facility near Ford's Dagenaham plant, CEME.

The Centre has well-equipped, spacious workshops for teaching the processes and skills required by car manufacturers as well as motor vehicle garage trades such as vehicle maintenance and repair. It has IT equipment in all its classrooms to allow the latest methods of teaching.

Among the students are 140 Advanced Apprenticeships working at Ford. They are joined by several hundred other general Further Education students, and school link students.

The Further Education work at CEME has already been recognised through the award of the status of Pathfinder Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Automotive Engineering.

The project is part of the on-going regeneration of the Thames Gateway area, while still remaining a manufacturing centre. The centre will also offers Higher Education courses and business incubators for start up companies.
