Men's Health
In the under-35's, twice as many men die as women the main causes being
accidents, suicides, poisoning and cancer. Men under 35 can get strokes
and heart attacks, so avoid alcohol binges, and try and have a healthy
lifestyle with less smoking, drinking, eating fatty foods and resting
well. Men should also have regular screenings to check their blood pressure
and cholesterol levels, and clinical examinations on a regular basis.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is found mostly in men in their 20's and 30's, and it
only accounts for 0.1% of all cancer deaths. As ever, the earlier it is
detected, the easier it is to cure. Men should avoid trauma and carcinogens
as well as high fat diets. And guys; don't be afraid or embarrassed to
examine yourself regularly (or more fun, get your partner to do it). One
testis may be slightly larger but both should weigh the same and they
should be rolled gently to check for lumps and tenderness. Don't worry
if you find a sausage-shaped lump at the back and top of each testicle,
that's supposed to be there, it's the epididymis, which stores your little
soldiers.
Suicide
Suicide is a major cause of avoidable death in young men, and the best
way to prevent it is to recognise the symptoms of depression and psychosis.
Of those who commit suicide, an estimated 90% have a mental disorder,
60 % of these have seen a GP within the last month, and a third have expressed
the wish to kill themselves. People who have previously attempted suicide
are more likely to succeed the second time. If you feel like it's all
getting too much - tell someone. And if a friend tells you he's feeling
depressed, take him seriously.
Accidents
It is estimated that five out of ten deaths of males between the ages
of 15-25 are the result of a driving accident, compared with three in
ten for women of the same age. These deaths are very often alcohol-related,
although there has been a significant rise in the numbers of drug-driving
accidents. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE and don't get drunk and think you can
fly.
Also when out drinking be careful to avoid injuries from the beer monkey!
