Cooking 1 of 21 of 2Suddenly, other than the odd Red Cross parcel from loved ones, you're on your own - one pot, one pan, a wooden spoon, and a packet of 3 Minute Supernoodles. Halls Of Residence are generally the cushier option - three meals on the table each day all ready-cooked. But, if and when you are not in such Gucci accommodation, or you become immune to the Chilli con Carne, Vienna Steaks, and mashed potato/peas/carrots, you could find yourself in a compromising situation with the aforementioned essentials, a match, and the sound of gas rushing at you. If you have received some sort of culinary training you will find yourself very popular but, if not, you may need some pointers. Books are a good idea and well worth a little investment but here we give you some little tips picked up along the way. Do not go shopping on an empty stomach or with a hangover - not only does it make Ice-cream, Pringles, and Red Bull seem all the more impressive but it will definitely be a more expensive shop than usual - trust us. Compare prices and don't just rely on what you're told - check out the weights and measures as well as the Pounds and Pence. Also look at the dates on the packets - even in the big supermarkets. The odd laugh and joke with your local shopkeepers might also see your way into some good deals. Often buying in bulk can be cost-effective and knocking-up a large chilli or casserole can be frozen and re-heated later on as long as you're a bit careful about what it is you are re-heating - check the packet or ask someone who knows. Don't forget if something is not to your liking then say so - do it in a friendly way but remember you're in a buyers' market. Make sure you get the essential vitamins and minerals - eat loads of fruit (thanks Mum for this one - Ed) and veggies - generally best to buy individual pieces of fruit you can choose yourself rather than get done over a box-full that's rotten towards the bottom. Veggi-dishes are also cheap and a (generally) safe option for the inexperienced chef. |
