Vocational study

Mature student studying

Returning to study can also improve your career prospects and increase your earning potential. This is especially true of vocational study – courses or subjects directly relevant either to the job you’re doing or the one you hope to do. This could include full-time study in teacher training or a short course to help you master the new book-keeping system your company has just started using.

In either case you’ll be balancing study with work – and no doubt a lot of other responsibilities – so it’s worth thinking about the kind of support you may need. Depending on the number of hours you’ll be studying each week, you may need to consider help with childcare, time management or financial assistance.

Some employers offer support such as study leave or financial assistance with course fees, especially if you are undertaking a course that can help you at work. Speak to your employer to find out what kind of support they can offer you.
