I have been interested in computers and business since I was young. My father runs a business and has taught me some of the basics about his business, but I wanted to learn more about how other companies are run, and gain experience I can use if I am going to run his business or my own one day.
I passed four GCSEs in Maths, English, Citizenship and Computing at school.
I went on to study applied business/ICT at NewVIc (GCE in applied business/ICT Double award at Newham Sixth Form College – 2 year course, equivalent to two A-levels).
As part of the course we had to investigate local businesses and find out about what they did and how they worked. As well as needing it as part of my coursework, the experience helped me understand better what local businesses wanted from their staff. I learnt to use a number of software programmes, including the basics of bookkeeping on SAGE software.
I am now working as an administrative assistant for Tower Hamlets council, in the accounts department. I am learning a lot about the organisation of a large public body, and about accounting practices and accountancy. I do like the job but… it is hard work. I am very tired most of the week and I now realise how easy life at school and college was.
