I’ve never been keen on sitting still, and never wanted to wear a suit or sit in an office. I have always been quite good with making things and enjoyed art and design at school.
I did GCSEs in 7 subjects and passed 6 of them A-D. I chose to go to Bromley College to study for an Intermediate Construction Award in Bricklaying. This took a year full time and I learnt about many aspects of brickwork. My intention was to continue to an Advanced award, but I was offered a job from a company in Lewisham. I have worked on a variety of different buildings, including rebuilding part of a railway station, building a house extension and we are now working on a larger project - a new supermarket. I really enjoy the social aspect, we meet up and then drive out to the site together. We work hard, but it’s really satisfying to leave a place a few weeks after you arrived and there’s a building there which wasn’t before. And I enjoy that I can go past it and say to people – “You see that? I built that!”.
I want to earn industry status as a qualified bricklayer, I have my CSCS card now and would like to continue working in bricklaying.
