Barnet and Southgate College were proud to host the Mayor’s Award for Visual Arts earlier this month at the College’s Southgate Campus. Building on the success of last year’s Mayor’s Award for Visual Arts, this year Enfield Council continued to work in partnership with Barnet and Southgate College, who provided art and design training for local primary school teachers.
The competition was open to all budding artists in years 5 and 6 attending any Enfield primary school. The celebration evening was the perfect opportunity to congratulate all of the schools and their nominated young artists. The winners were presented their awards and certificates by the Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Cllr. Kate Anolue. Also present were the children’s families and teachers, who were there alongside College staff to applaud them while they went on stage to formally accept their awards.
There were six shortlisted pieces of artwork from each year group, 12 pieces of art work in total. The first prize for Year 6 went to: Tekin Doghan, for his artwork entitled ‘Crowded Planet’ and he is from Merryhills Primary School and the first prize for Year 5 went to Katherine Patino-Ibanez for her artwork, ‘Save Our Seas’ she is also from Merryhills Primary School.
Alyson Cook, Creative Arts Curriculum Manager from Barnet and Southgate College said:
“The standard of the entries from all the primary school children has once again been outstanding and we were really impressed with all of their artistic ability and use of colour and texture. It was extremely difficult to choose just two winners and we’d like to congratulate all of the nominees for some fantastic work.”

“We have been delighted with the success of the Mayor’s Award for Visual Arts this year. Barnet and Southgate College has done a great job running the training for teachers and supporting the competition. That has resulted in a high level of buy in from Enfield Primary Schools and the really high quality of art work from Enfield’s young artists.”
