The winners of the ninth annual Mayor’s Award for Writing were announced on Thursday 25 April at Latymer School in Enfield.
This year the Awards were hosted by Barnet and Southgate College in collaboration with Enfield Council and the Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Kate Anolue; who kindly presented the winners with their awards and certificates.
This year the theme for the awards was ‘Connections’. There was a host of fascinating tales of fiction from years 5 to 8, highlighting a very high standard of creative writing. The second award in illustrated writing invited primary school pupils from years 3 and 4 to enter a hand written account with illustrations, which could either be factual or a short story.
Darren Mepham, CEO of Barnet and Southgate College said: “The Writing Awards continue to go from strength to strength, highlighting the breadth of talent in creative writing across a number of primary and secondary schools in the Borough. This year the theme was ‘Connections’ and it was fascinating to see how our young authors interpreted the subject with a myriad of thought provoking submissions.”
Gwyneth Hamand, Learning Consultant for Enrichment and Progression from Enfield Council said: “We have been delighted with the success of the writing awards this year. The imagination, effort and passion shown in all of the stories is an inspiration to us all. Thank you to all of the Enfield primary and secondary schools that took part, and huge congratulations to all of our young authors.”
The judges for both awards included staff from Barnet and Southgate College, the Mayor of Enfield and Enfield Council. All the winners received a certificate and a medal, and the overall winning schools received an engraved shield from the Deputy Mayor of Enfield.
